UPDATE: Saturday, July 27  (9:00 a.m.)

Recent discoveries are necessitating an emergency repair to the Georgia Tech chilled water system.  Teams are preparing to begin these repairs today.

This requires shutting off the chilled water supply to additional buildings on campus (red) as reflected in the updated map below. This means that much of campus will be without cooled air for an undetermined period, including research facilities. Domestic water supply for taps or faucets will not be affected. This emergency repair could take at least 48 hours to complete.

Buildings in blue on the map below will continue to receive chilled water. However, due to low pressure campuswide, these buildings may not be cooling at normal levels.

It is imperative that research and any temperature-sensitive equipment/processes are protected. If you are responsible for such assets, coordinate immediately with your building manager to request immediate assistance with spot coolers or other needs. You must take action now.

Please refer to the updated map below and list of affected buildings. The pink circles on the map indicate the locations of the two leaks in the chilled water system.

Friday, July 26

The Georgia Tech campus is experiencing significant disruptions to the chilled water supply which is affecting cooling systems across campus.

Teams in Infrastructure and Sustainability (I&S) and Emergency Management (EM) have been monitoring the situation closely throughout the day and working with building managers to identify sensitivities and help ensure mission critical systems and work are maintained.

Currently, the buildings in blue on the map are able to receive chilled water. However, due to low pressure campuswide, these buildings may not be cooling at normal levels. Buildings in red (listed in the chart) are not able to receive chilled water at this time.

Several buildings including the John Lewis Student Center and Stamps Commons and the Joseph Brown Whitehead Building (Stamps Health Services) have closed with plans to reopen on Monday, July 29. Due to volatile conditions, other buildings may close until the chilled water systems are operating at satisfactory levels. Anticipate disruptions to continue into next week.

ACT NOW if you have temperature sensitive equipment or research on campus, and continue to monitor your areas over the weekend and communicate with your building manager. Teams in I&S and EM will be actively monitoring the situation. More information will be provided as soon as it is available.
